When some six decades ago Rughupati Jute Mill in Biratnagar began spinning its wheels, in what than generated the largest employment in the country, everyone there assumed their wheel of fortune will also spin. But now after all these decades the only thing that has really spun apart from millions of tons of Jute are works, in most cases to their third generation.
As huge the Mill is, it has also fostered one of the largest dweller around it. One woman, who has been working in the Mill for almost 40 years (also a subject in the film), says, “the only thing I have really earn here is the friendship of all these people…”
“Lives on a String” is a film about them. Shot in span of six months it captures the daily lives in and around the Mill, which still employs over 3500 people. Apart from the age-old hardship now with the change in Mill ownership and also dramatic changes in national political system the situation for the Mill workers at times have become untenable. And we wonder how long those lives will go on spinning the wheels to produce the STRING.
